Whose bedroom could use a little bit of love?!! Today, I'm sharing 5 easy ways to breathe new life into your bedroom. Recently, I had a client that hired me to do just that!
My client already had their main furniture pieces and just needed help completing the room. Below is what their master bedroom looked like when we first started working together.
My clients wanted their bedroom to feel light and airy, cohesive and relaxing. Here is the mood board I created to help my clients visualize how all the suggested decor will look together.
Using my client's bedroom as an example, let's get to those 5 easy tips to transform your bedroom:
Tip #1 Hang drapery panels. Drapery panels soften a space and help a bedroom feel cozier. As a general rule, hang drapes at least 10 to 12"+ above the window where possible. This will help to draw the eye up and add visual height to the room. As you can see in the photo below, there wasn't much space above the window - we hung the drapes as high as we could, right below the crown molding.
Tip #2 Spruce up your pillows. Typically, the bed is the focal point of a bedroom, so you want your bed to shine! An easy way to do this is by adding beautiful pillows. If you aren't a pillow person, you don't need to add a million pillows, just a few will do. I like to use synthetic - down alternative pillows inserts because little feathers escaping from goose -down pillow inserts can be quite annoying and never ending. One of my favorite retail sources for nice faux down inserts is pillowflex.com. They feel like the real thing but with no bothersome feathers.
Tip #3 Lay down a beautiful rug. This is a must-have if you have wood floors. Even if you have carpet a rug is still a worthy addition. A rug anchors the furniture and helps the room feel complete. Put the long side of the rug under the bed and extend it out past the end of the bed. Bigger is almost always better. if you'd like to learn more about selecting the right size of a rug read this post.
Tip #4 Update your nightstand Lamps. Look for lamps that will make a statement. Pay attention to the size of the lamp. If you have large nightstands don't use little puny lamps! I see people do this all the time! I usually look for lamps that are at least as tall as the nightstand itself. And while we are talking about lighting, go ahead and change all the light bulbs in the room to daylight bulbs instead of soft white.
Tip #5 Place a large piece of art over the bed. You can also place a series of 2 or 3 art pieces over the bed, or a pretty round mirror . . . there are a million different options on what you can hang over a bed, but we are keeping it simple in this article, folks - find an art piece that has the colors of your room decor and conveys the style and look you are after. We chose this soft watercolor art piece because it incorporates all of the colors in the pillows and rug and felt calming. Some of my favorite retail sites for art are minted.com, collectionprints.com and juniperprintshop.com.
